Introduction
He graduated from the Humboldt University of Berlin Medical School in 1993. He completed his residency training at the Augentagesklinik Groß-Pankow, the Virchow Campus of the University of Berlin and the Aravind Eye Hospitals in India. From 1998 he was established in private practice in West Germany and in 2002 he founded Aurelios Eye Centers. In the field of ophthalmic surgery, his main focus lies on cataract surgery, vitreoretinal surgery, reconstructive/trauma surgery and modern glaucoma surgery.
During his career, he has performed more than 40,000 operations and trained many eye specialists worldwide. He has given more than 300 scientific presentations at national and international conferences and performed more than 25 live surgeries at international meetings around the world.
He has published several peer-reviewed scientific papers and has received several awards at international meetings, including ASCRS, ESCRS, EVRS and DOC conferences. He is a member of several ophthalmological organizations, scientific and advisory boards.
During his career, he has made several inventions, such as the Scharioth macular lens for patients with advanced maculopathy, the Glaucolight assisted canaloplasty, the microscope-mounted angled view system, the Lightindentor for vitreoretinal surgery and the intrascleral haptic fixation of PCIOL in the absence of a capsular support.
He has been a principal investigator and participated in several large prospective multicentre trials. Since 2013 he has been a private professor at the University of Szeged in Hungary and since 2023 he has been a visiting professor at the University of Timisoara in Romania.
